Practice the questions before you rush to an answer.

The Socratic Trainer gives you a modern, ambiguous scenario and asks you to slow down long enough to find the questions worth asking before you form an opinion, make a decision, or offer advice.

You ask the questions. The trainer coaches you on them.

  1. Choose a category and difficulty, or ask for a surprise scenario.
  2. Read the scenario without trying to solve it immediately.
  3. Write one to three questions you would ask before reaching a conclusion.
  4. Use the trainer's feedback to revise one question or ask the next one.
  5. Finish with a short debrief, then try another scenario.

Open the situation before you close it.

A useful question does not need to sound philosophical. It needs to help you notice what you have not asked yet.

  • Clarify what is actually being claimed or observed.
  • Surface assumptions that have not been tested.
  • Ask what reasons or evidence support the claim.
  • Bring in another point of view.
  • Examine implications and consequences.
  • Question whether the problem has been framed correctly.
